Here are a few tips to help you organise learning at home. Discuss these with adults so they can help you establish a routine:

  • Set up a timetable for Monday – Friday, divided into am and pm slots. Make sure it is realistic and that you also have breaks. An example is on the back of this sheet.
  • If you have brothers or sisters working at home as well, you may need to organise a rota so you can share laptops or other devices – an adult can help you sort this out.
  • Set up a work station at home – it can be a desk in your bedroom or at a table somewhere else in your home, but have somewhere that is dedicated to learning.
  • Make sure you have your equipment to hand – everyone should have the basics – pen, pencil, rubber, ruler.
  • Have all your log-in details available – stick them up next to your timetable.
  • Before you start the work for the day set yourself a target of what you want to achieve. Break longer tasks down into chunks if you need to.
  • If you have tasks that involve revision, for example learning vocabulary or going over course content, think about how best you learn. For example if you are a visual learner, you may like to look at or draw pictures and use them as visual aids, or produce charts or diagrams or mind maps. Some people prefer a more auditory approach to learning, which means they need to speak out their ideas and hear information. Some people learn best by doing things and being practical. If you are set project work you might like to think about how to present this work based on your skills.
  • Make sure you take breaks and move away from your work station
  • Email your link TA, if you have one, to ask them for help if you get stuck or you need help breaking down or adapting tasks
  • Plan how you are going to reward yourself when you have successfully completed a work session.
